Overseas tourism to South Korea has increased tenfold since 1969. Most visitors are Japanese, who come for the golf and Seoul's nightlife. Cheju-do Island is a favored honeymoon destination. 13% of all tourists are visiting relatives; this would once have meant relations serving with the US army. Today, Los Angeles-based Korean-Americans make up the greatest proportion of visitors. However, despite the publicity generated by the 1988 Olympics, and the decision to make 1994 "Visit Korea Year," South Korea is still not seen in the West as a prime tourist destination.
